The Security Engineer position resides in the Security and Privacy Technologies department at CableLabs.  The CableLabs Security and Privacy Technologies team drives innovation toward a unified threat-resistant networking environment for both wired and mobile experiences. We research, develop, publish, improve, and influence tools and standards to advance security and privacy. We develop new controls to keep our industry ahead of threats and adversaries on the network. We develop communities that evangelize and foster collaboration, dissemination of knowledge, best practices, and training. In doing so, this team is critical in all CableLabs projects, but more than that, we are foundational to the projects and technologies in an entire industry – when people ask you what you do at work, you can tell them that you keep them safe online.

The Security Engineer role will engage across a variety of standards organizations. The ideal candidate will represent an entire industry, so you must be professional in leveraging persuasion, influence, and technical skills to gain consensus among other experts in the field. You will collaborate with a variety of partners, including product owners, legal, and security experts, to deliver security solutions to industry adoption.  The impact of your work will help build the technology stacks that will be used across the internet and your efforts will support security-enabled network technologies that you can be proud of for your entire career.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Engage in the design and implementation of applications and platforms within a specific area of research, partnering with the product team and other stakeholders through development.
  • Research, write, and edit documentation including technical requirements, evaluation plans, white papers, test results, technical manuals, presentation and reports.
  • Evaluate and develop specifications, technical requirements and algorithms for future industry products, applications, and platforms.
  • Contribute to the industry by crafting patents, API's and other intellectual property.
  • Collaborate with teams outside of immediate work group. Representing the work team in providing solutions to technical issues associated with assigned projects.

Qualifications

What Is a Must Have  

  • 3+ years engineering experience with a Bachelor of Science (or higher) degree in computer/software/cybersecurity/privacy
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Ability to program in several languages (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, R)
  • Experience and understanding of database technologies (SQL, Data architecture, NoSQL, MongoDB, etc.)
  • Experience with interface development and formats (e.g. REST, SOAP, JSON, XML)
  • Experience and understanding of IoT protocols (e.g. CSA, Matter, Thread, CoAP, MQTT, Bluetooth,)
  • Experience and understanding of IP based protocols (e.g. TCP, UDP, ICMP, DNS, SNMP)
  • Experience developing frameworks, methodologies, or assessments to evaluate effectiveness and robustness of technologies, and sharing this knowledge within the broader community
  • Cybersecurity experience. 
  • Good understanding of risk concepts
  • Experience in practical risk mitigation and remediation techniques.
  • Systems level and adversarial engineering experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly articulate evaluations, gaps and suggested improvement roadmaps to senior leadership stakeholders. Ability to contribute to industry specifications and other detailed technical documentation
  • Superb interpersonal skills including conflict resolution with all stakeholder levels.
  • Effective consensus building and influencing skills with senior and executive level stakeholders.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented collaborative environment.
  • Ability to develop project proposals, develop support, and lead projects through to implementation and delivery.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and business risk evaluation

 

What Will Set You Apart

  • Standards body experience, particularly leadership roles in larger SDOs
  • Security or privacy related publications and research
  • Security certifications such as CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) and CASP (CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner)
  • Understanding of SIM (e-SIM and soft-SIM) technologies and emerging cryptography technologies or techniques such as quantum resistant encryption and new key exchange technologies
  • Unix system administration skills
  • Knowledge of Cable/RF networks
  • Knowledge of carrier ISP networks and technologies

Compensation: The salary range is $135,200 - $165,360. This position is eligible for bonus incentive compensation up to 20% of base salary.

Working conditions and physical requirements:

This job operates in a professional office and lab environment. This role routinely uses standard office and lab equipment.  This position requires travel up to 25% of the time.
