The Journalism program in the Department of Communications at the University of La Verne (30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles) has an immediate opening for a part-time adjunct instructor/professor to teach Intermediate Broadcast Journalism in the Spring 2025 semester. The 16-week semester begins in February 2025. The course is taught in person and can be scheduled as a morning, afternoon or evening class that meets once or twice a week. Intermediate Broadcast Journalism Course Description: This class will help students apply the elements of news gathering that effectively inform audiences. They will examine the rigors of broadcast journalism and engage in activities that will help them think critically about news. Through classroom and fieldwork exercises, students will gain practical experience producing simple news packages and in the process will sharpen their research, reporting, writing and interviewing skills. Students will achieve competency in shooting and editing video stories. Course Objectives: Students will: · Understand and apply the First Amendment principles and the laws appropriate to professional journalistic practice. · Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical principles that guide journalism; apply concepts and theories such as fairness and accuracy and be able to critically analyze information and news stories. · Understand concepts and apply theories in the use of and presentations of images and information. · Write clear, concise, accurate broadcast copy through practice critical evaluation of your work. · Refine the skills needed to research, report, package, and deliver television news and feature stories. · Use digital recording devices to gather a variety of visual elements including interviews, and apply them to broadcast stories. · Apply effective interviewing skills and techniques through field assignments requiring the conducting of interviews with digital recording devices. Responsibilities Under the direction of the Program Chair the adjunct professor will: Develop and Maintain Syllabus Materials: The adjunct professor is responsible for selecting and compiling tests, assignments and/or online discussion exercises. Facilitate Class Instruction: The adjunct professor is responsible for teaching the assigned course in accordance with learning objectives and session plan outlines. Evaluate Student Performance: The adjunct professor is expected to administer evaluations of student performance based on course deliverables and course rubrics. All course grades will be posted on the Blackboard Grade Center.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree, Journalism. Professional journalism experience – 5 Years

Master’s Degree, Journalism
